This artwork is a faithful restoration of a remarkable 2,400-year-old mosaic unearthed in Antioch (modern Hatay, Turkey) in 2012. Originally created as a floor mosaic for a Roman dining hall, it features a reclining skeleton holding a wine cup, with bread and a wine jar nearby — a striking reminder from the ancients: 👉 “Be cheerful. Enjoy your life.”
Known today as the “Cheerful Skeleton Mosaic”, the Greek inscription reads Euphrosynos (“Joyful”). This rare motif is a powerful example of the memento mori tradition, urging us to embrace the fleeting nature of life and savor every moment.
